Alas, there is only one machine in the house that is running Linux and
is close to modern speed and memory standards. The other available
machine is much slower, has less memory, and doesn't have an nVidia
display driver -- which is one of the problems.

It is my goal to do what you recommend. I'll need to build another
machine before I can do that. One of these days...
