[PLUG] Troubleshooting Printing Problem

This used to be a non-issue with the EasySoftware PrintPro tools. But, now
that that's no longer available and I have only hplip to use, I'm restricted
in the information available to me. (HPLIP seems to be installed, but it
won't recognize the printers even when handed an IP address it knows is
valid. I've given up on getting it to work properly.)

Anyway, since the system shut down with the crashed power supply I've not
needed to print anything. Today, I do need to print, and nothing seems to be
reaching the printer.

Employing the troubleshooting hints on the hplip web site, I know this:

   1) I can ping the laser printer by both IP address and host name.

   2) I've restarted CUPS. The tail of /var/log/cups/error_log shows:

D [04/Oct/2007:10:23:57 -0700] StartJob: envp[4]="LANG=en"

D [04/Oct/2007:10:23:57 -0700] StartJob: filterfds[0] = [ -1 8 ]
D [04/Oct/2007:10:23:57 -0700] start_process("/usr/lib/cups/backend/socket",0xbf9021b0, 0xbf901520, 7, 8, 6)
I [04/Oct/2007:10:23:57 -0700] Started backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/socket (PID 13955) for job 1886.

   Which looks OK to me.

   3) snmpwalk looks OK, too:

[rshepard at salmo ~]$ snmpwalk -Os -c public -v 1 192.168.55.192 1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0
enterprises.11.2.3.9.1.1.7.0 = STRING: "MANUFACTURER:Hewlett-Packard;COMMAND SET:PJL,MLC,PCL,PCLXL,POSTSCRIPT;MODEL:HP LaserJet
5M;CLASS:PRINTER;DESCRIPTION:Hewlett-"

But, nothing happens at the printer.

What else can I test? How do I identify the problem so it can be solved?

Rich
