I wonder if SuSE is using HAL. That's new with Slackware-12.0 and the
upgrade instructions are to remove all optical drive references from
/etc/fstab to avoid confusing the automatic detection of devices. If I
understand correctly, HAL also detects USB, Firewire, and other devices when
they're connected.
