konqueror works fine though (not sure about nfs)

Maybe set an alias or script on the one box which launches the browser 
from the other.

Why do you need to share a home dir on the headless boxes?  Other 
than .bashrc, .emacsrc or whatever?  I've got the same situation, but 
anything needed on the headless boxes could be created roughly once 
(maybe sync'd daily, but they change maybe monthly at most.)
