I used to think that before I owned a mac.  The reality is, if you want 
to run BSD on a case-insensitive filesystem using a broken terminal to 
operate a command-line which can barely communicate with the gui on a 
hood-welded-half-shut system with a nearly empty /etc, they're great.

Shiny, but tedious.

That may be the case just for general comfort and convenience.
