Yes. And, it has worked with Linux tools in the past on an earlier Linux
machine. The current problem might be the SCSI card, or it might be that
the card just isn't configured right. I have another card, which I will
bring along.

The Epson provided driver allows pre-scanning, and cropping before the
real scan. It also has a number of image adjustments that can be made. I
 haven't had a reason to use those (they are color adjustment tools that
are also available in the GIMP), but I have made good use of the
cropping feature in the past.
