[PLUG] nVIDIA drivers

Every time I need to halt the server/workstation with the new motherboard
and built-in nVIDIA video chip, the darned proprietary driver disappears and
I need to re-install it from the downloaded file. Makes no sense to me and
it's a PITA, but that's what's happening.
I tried the 'nv' module and discovered that the associated i2c module was
not built. So I changed the kernel's .config file to build all the nv helper
modules, ran 'make modules' and 'make modules_install', but it's nowhere to
be found. Given the weird behavior of the disappearing proprietary driver, I
wonder if installing that kills off the competition of the open source
driver.
Running 'locate nv' returns no driver. I find the source files, but
nothing in /lib/modules/2.6.19.2/drivers/video/.
I'll need to shut down this box this coming weekend to attach the new
cd-rw and a couple of case ports I missed when installing the new
motherboard. I'd like to have a working X driver when I reboot. Your advice,
suggestions, and recommendations will be helpful.
