In my experience you can avoid the reboot by unloading and loading the
iwl4965 kernel module (modprobe -r iwl4965;modprobe iwl4965).
However, I have yet to find a way to avoid the issue with the iwl4965
card.

I wish it worked as well as the older iwl3945 card in my old thinkpad.
