Before This American Life had a sanctioned podcast available for 
download I used a program called "streamripper" to record it from OPB's 
live radio stream on Sunday mornings, it worked well and was simple to 
set up and use.  As for downloading youtube videos, there used to be a 
couple different greasmonkey scripts which allowed you to download the 
flash video.
