Whatever is wrong is blocking me from getting an IP address and it is happening regardless of what AP I connect to.

Dear John, 

One other thought - when I connect via dhclient successfully, I get
messages in /var/log/daemon.log and /var/log/syslog. 

When there are problems, I think they also appear there.
