Well, the plot thickens (or sickens, depending on one's point of view).
There are three definitions of the LJ5 in /etc/cups/printers.conf: laser5
(generic), laser5_single (simplex printing), and the default laser5_duplex.
Trying to print with either of the latter two fails; lpstat shows a failed
socket.
_However_, if I print using -Plaser5 (the generic definition), it works!
It works both from the command line ('lpr -P laser5 -l <filename>.ps') and
from within xpdf if I change the printer definition.
Here's the current /etc/cups/printers.conf (after I hand edited it to
change the stopped state to idle and removed the messages:
# Printer configuration file for CUPS v1.2.11

This time, while lpstat shows a failed socket the printers.conf file has
not been altered.
Can anyone enlighten me on what seems to be inexplicable?
