John,

   Running 2.6.24.5-smp. The only other kernel available is 2.6.18.6 and
that's not what I booted.

   The keyboard works just fine in X (in a virtual console). It's the mouse
protocols or similar that are no longer working correctly.

   Tools such as xorgconfig may not produce useful results, depending on the
ecentricities of the hardware installed.
