   Ta-da! Copying /root/xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf (and making
/etc/modprobe.d/psmouse match the protocol and device options) fixed the
problem. I am truly grateful that you pointed me to a solution that was
totally unknown to me. I've used xorgconf, but it just did not do the trick.
