Is anyone running php5 with apache2 on Ubuntu Hardy?

In Synaptic I see that php5 is already loaded, along with apache2. But,
when I try visit localhost, where there exists a file, index.php, and no
index.html, I get a message from Firefox that says,

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Opening

You have chosen to open

(blank line)

which is a: PHTML file
from: http://localhost

What should Firefox do with this file?

( ) Open with [Browse...]
(.) Save File

...
--------------------------------------------------------------------

If I replace index.php with an index.html, it works.

I tried Googling, and got instructions that don't match what I have. One
of them wants me to edit /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini. I don't have /etc/php5.

Does this mean that, even though it shows as installed in Synaptic, php5
isn't really installed?

Is there some other location I should look at to find php.ini?

Is there a step I missed for which I haven't found the documentation?

TIA.
