While we are on the subject of measuring Linux memory usage, two
not-so-subtle points:

1. Kernels from 2.6.25 to the present have better process memory usage
measurement capabilities than those up through 2.6.24. See

2. With any kernel, you need to account for shared memory, libraries,
etc., to properly assess the memory required by an application. The tool
that does this is in the "procps" package and is called "pmap". See
