[PLUG] redetecting partitions without rebooting?

Is there a way to make linux rediscover the partition layout without
rebooting. I wanted to wipe out the pointless partition table on a
block device that is going to be used entirely for LVM so I copied a
little bit from /dev/zero to the beginning of the disk, but even
without a partition table /proc/partitions still lists the ghost
partitions. How do I make linux report the right info now that it has
changed?
