The problem is Grub.  As far as I can tell there is no way to get grub
to be absolutely silent about what it is doing.  Even with
"hiddenmenu" and "timeout 0" in the menu.lst file, grub still blabs
"starting grub ...", if only for a split second.

Now if you could get grub to be quiet, then you could dual boot into
Windows 98/2000 by default.  When you need to do real work, you reboot
and press ESC after the POST screen to bring up the grub menu, select
linux, and away you go.
