I've often wished/hoped for a universal version of this file,
something like /etc/linux-release with a simple whitespace-separated
format, with the third field being optional:
<distribution name> <version> [<nickname>]
Shell scripts that need to work across various distributions and
releases, installers for ISVs, and utilities like cfengine would all
benefit from not having to do the same inefficient walk through /etc
does /etc/redhat-release exist?
how about /etc/debian_version?
or ubuntu or gentoo or mandriva or ...?
Dumb, dumb.
