I realize you probably don't have time to play and experiment, and I 
know that your switch-fu dwarfs mine, but I'm wondering...

Are these machines plugged into a switch or a hub? If the former, try 
putting a hub between the client and the switch. In some cases, I've 
seen that clear up the problem. My lingering suspicion is that the 
issue has been switch configuration, but I have no switch-fu to speak 
of, so I've always been stymied.

Also, can you assign these machines a static address? If so, do the 
network drivers work correctly?
