[PLUG] Router Problem

Comcast had an outage in my area this afternoon. When service was restored, I could not connect to the Internet through my router; I had to run an Ethernet cable from my laptop to the cable modem. Comcast was of no help; they don't support routers.

I telnet-ed in to the router's manager menu (Netgear RT-314) and ran the status routine from the system maintenance menu. It showed the WAN port status as 10M/Half, and showed a few packets being sent and received between the cable modem and the router (this while the Ethernet cable was still connected to the router). However, it showed no IP address for the WAN port. BTW, when the cable is no longer connecting the router to the cable modem, the status of the WAN port reads Down.

Now, with the cable connected to the laptop, I find that the laptop does have an IP address, and that I can send this e-mail.

Any recommendations on where to dig next to figure out what happened, and how to correct it will be greatly appreciated.
