[PLUG] Grub won't launch Debian until I hit return key

Somebody suggested I mess with the timeout value in
/boot/grub/menu.lst, and that "fixed" it.  With the timeout set
explicitly to 0, the box boots unattended.  With any other value, or
with the line commented out, the box waits forever in the grub screen.
No matter what the value of timeout, there's no counter at the bottom
telling me how long until it boots.  So at least it's honest.

I put "fixed" in quotes because with the timeout at 0 there's no way
(ok, I only tried twice) to break in and pick other than the default
kernel/cmdline.  So it's back to lilo for this box.
