Alan,
I bought an Acer Aspire from a big box retailer just over a year ago and
while it did just recently give up the ghost it met most of your
requirements I believe as it was an AMD dual core system. It was cheap (sub
700) with a 15.4 inch display and ran Linux without a hitch even with the
included ATi video .. which with recent releases of the proprietary drivers
makes eye candy with compiz very easy.
