[PLUG] Sound problems AGAIN

A little more info:

I created a new user. The new user suffers from the same problem, i.e., only
left channel has sound output.

I looked at /etc for files changed since the successful recording. I could find
nothing.

Does anybody know if Kubuntu uses autoupdate of packages? I can find nothing
about it. The most I can find is that users complain that no autoupdate is
available in KDE. If this is the case, the only things that changed from the
time I was successful recording in Audacity (August 30) and the failures (Sept
3) was running Audacity and running Amarok.

I am at a dead end.

I realize that sound problems have so many causes and solutions that asking for
ideas is like shooting darts with a blindfold on, but here goes (in desperation):

Was working fine. Now only one channel has output sound, and Audacity does not
record. Just last Saturday I made two recordings without a hitch. I have made
no (intentional) changes to the system; no updates.

Output is fine in Windows (dual boot), so hardware is not the issue.

I have compared the output of amixer scontents now and that produced when the
sound was working, and they are identical.

I am running Kubuntu 8.04. My sound card is Audigy 2:

amixer -c 0 info
Card hw:0 'Audigy2'/'Audigy 2 Value [SB0400] (rev.0, serial:0x10011102) at
0xa400, irq 5'
    Mixer name : 'SigmaTel STAC9750,51'
    Components : 'AC97a:83847650'
    Controls : 200
    Simple ctrls : 35

This is unchanged from when everything was fine.

I have Googled for info on one dead channel. Some others report the same, but
frankly, I cannot understand the very terse replies, and many appear related to
particular sound cards/drivers.

Ideas?

Thanks,
-Denis
