To confirm, the system stops when - or just after the /etc/rc.local
script. If I'm hearing you right, this is a new installation, with
nothing in the /etc/rc.local script which could stop the install.

S99rc.local is a script in the /etc/rc2.d/ directory. That means all
other Start scripts (which start with an S) with numbers less than 99
have run OK. I think two other scripts run in this directory just after
- (if I'm assuming right, that scripts are run in alphabetical order).

S99rmnologin
S99stop-readahead

Since the rmnologin script does start the display manager, that seems to
confirm your suspicion of a problem with GDM.

In any case, if there are problems with the noted scripts, you should be
able to boot into recovery mode. It brings up a mostly blue screen,
where you can select an option like "drop to root shell prompt"

where you have administrative access - and should also have networking.
At that point you'll be able to copy the files you want for the
"syncrhonization" you've described.

Thanks,
Mike
