That's what Ubuntu has me set up with.  I've further found out that 
everything is fine when I connect to just _look_ at the desktop, but I 
want to sit in my living room with my laptop and do work on this machine 
(my office is in a detached building).

It's all on a local network!  It should be the easiest thing in the 
world!  Aaargh!
