   Ah, so! Good lesson. The default Slackware-12.2 kernel has both set as
modules:

CONFIG_HAVE_KVM=y
CONFIG_KVM=m
CONFIG_KVM_INTEL=m
CONFIG_KVM_AMD=m
# CONFIG_KVM_TRACE is not set

   This is the 2.6.27.7 kernel.
