I'd say go for the T400. It's a nice size and has a good amount of
power. I run arch on it currently, but I am sure Ubuntu will work just
fine too.

Dan, Thanks for the input. I looked at the T400, but would probably go with
the T500 due to its larger (15") screen. It seems to be pretty much the
same as the T400 otherwise.
