Does joe have a "drop to shell" or "execute system command" or similar
function? If so, I would use it to run "env" while in both conditions
(working and not working). Then you can compare variables and hopefully one
will show up incorrect.

I don't specifically know the answer to your question. I have not used joe
nor alpine.
