Do you mean that the PCSPEAKER control in alsamixer has no effect, or that
there is no PCSPEAKER control?  On my
laptop (Dell 2650, Ubuntu 8.04) I can raise and lower the PCSPEAKER volume
and hear volume level changes with ctl-g.  This is in a simple text console
(no
window manager). I do have to exit alsamixer to hear the changes.
