yeah, that burned me once back when i did desktop support, so it was
the first thing i checked, before i started googling or wrote here =)

you and me both.

i only have 12 sliders categories, of which 3 are totally disabled (no
sliders, just the label and the option to mute/unmute). i've tried
turning everything all the way up and unmuting to no avail.

here's what amixer says i have as far as controllable audio devices
(and yes, the pcspkr module is loaded):

fool at kailarose$ amixer scontrols
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'Front',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Front Mic Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'CD',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic Boost',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Mono',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',1
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1

Tony, can you tell me what yours says? lsmod outputs don't show
anything important & different to me--the pcspkr module is obviously
effective since removing it silences the beeps entirely.

This is a dell precision t5400, which seems rather well-supported by ubuntu...
