what does your CUPS log file (probably handled via syslogd) say?
sounds to me from the lack of ethernet traffic like it's dropping
things on the floor somewhere, and maybe cups has records of it
somewhere that your GUI is not reporting to you?

it (cups) also might be responsible for the pdftops thing, despite
your insistence that cups not mess with the file en route to the
printer.  or not.  funny story, PS is also Made By Adobe, though
everyone else has coopted it by now.
