There was an interesting Slashdot discussion a few days ago about the
Seagate problem.  My take-away from it was:

1) All hard-drive manufacturers periodically go through rough patches,
so just because people have had good/bad experiences with
Seagate/WD/IBM/etc. doesn't mean others should buy/avoid these brands.

2) Whenever possible, buy drives from different manufactures at
different times.  Problem drives tend to come in batches, so avoid
buying drives in batches.  This lessens the chance you'll end up with
a bunch of problems all at once.

3) Maxtor sucks. :-)

Probably nothing people around here didn't already know, but it was
instructive for me.
