See, I think this assumption may be the core flaw of your logic. I don't
know anyone who bought a widescreen monitor who thought they were getting
more square inches of pixels. In fact I, doubt very much they thought about
the number of pixels at all. It's much more likely that their thought
process was like, "I want it to be (X big or bigger) and look pretty and
work with my computer and be cheap enough that I can afford it." Beyond
that, the average consumer _just doesn't care_.

Similar to the adage "Don't attribute to malice what can easily be explained
by incompetence.", "Don't attribute to corporate fleecing conspiracy what
can easily be explained by purchasing priorities that differ from your own."
