I think I paid something like $540 for it a year ago.  Something
closer to $500 than $600, anyway.  And that generated an *ouch*
response from me as well, but having endured the pain and then
forgotten about it (like, apparently, child-birth or something), I'm
happy _now_.

I typically open Gimp, then open the scanner from Gimp, the scans go
straight to Gimp, I can clean up the edges, adjust colors, etc, and
save from there.
