What application?

Recently, I was using a WinTV PVR 350 to transfer video tapes to MPEG.
After trying everything I could think of, I fell back on
"cat /dev/video0 > capture.mpg"

I gotta get some cheap cameras and one of those $12 4-channel USB capture
boards from DealExtreme.  Linux has some great motion-detection and
computer vision libraries.
