I'm seeing other info that suggests the same thing.  Now it comes down
to sound card input quality.  Let's say I want to get a really
good-sounding card.  The M-Audio Audiophile looks intriguing:

It uses a VIA VT1712 chipset.  One has to consider kernel
compatibility.  Any high quality cards (preferably with RCA inputs
like this one, since a good connection is critical) that are known to
work with the linux kernel?

I'm getting an electric viola.  They all seem to come with built-in
pre amps.  It probably has to do with the electrical qualities of
transducer bridges.
