Another idea: Firefox lets you print to a file.  This file is in
postscript format.  Can you print one of these with lpr?  That would
assure you that Firefox is producing valid postscript, and it can be
printed with the lpr command.

If all that is true, but you can't print from firefox, then maybe try
setting a default printer in CUPS, and then changing
"print.print_command" to just plain old "lpr".
