[PLUG] Another -- Different -- OpenOffice.org Question

Last evening we tried to update OO.o-2.4 to the most recent version
available for Xubuntu. The process wouldn't let us start.

We navigated to the Synaptic Package Manager and tried to update there,
but the list has all the OO.o components individually, not collectively.

So, I logged in as root and tried 'apt-get upgrade' only to learn that
/var/log/dpkg/<something> directory could not be locked.

I'm not familiar with Debian or its derivatives so I assume that it's a
user error easily corrected when someone points out what I should do.
Actually, I'd like to upgrade the distribution, too, which should bring OO.o
more current than 2.4.

As an aside, what prompted this is the apparent inability of 2.4 to
recognize and/or open a presentation I had converted for her from .ppt to
.odp using my copy of OO.o-3.1.1.
