Although I do like to have a root password set, if I ever get a system
that will not boot I immediately reach for my GRML rescue CD. GRML is
command line only, but better than any other I have ever used. It has a
complete set of tools - nano, vi(m), mdadm, fdisk, e2fsck, grub, etc. It
also automounts every partition and leaves me at a root prompt. There
is also Knoppix, but GRML is leaner and faster because it was designed
specifically for fixing systems that won't boot.
