It's worth noting that this switch doesn't require a new OS install,
just aptitude install xubuntu-desktop (or something like that -- it
may be renamed now) and log out / reboot and log back in with xfce
instead of gnome.

Be aware that there is quite a lot of overlap between the xfce and
gnome variants of ubuntu.  Many of the background services that
xfce-session kicks up are just bits of gnome. (eg: gnome-power-manager
and gnome-settings-daemon, for starters).  This probably isn't
particularly important for the OP's performance issues, but if you're
troubleshooting issues in gnome, then switching to xfce will only
change some of the variables.  (which may be good or bad, depending on
the circumstances -- but it's good to know.)
