In the past, when I have had tough problems like yours, I have found
solutions on the IRC channel.
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/chat

By the way, I upgraded ubuntu (gnome) from 9.10 to 10.04 on my Toshiba
laptop. My laptop does not have NVIDIA graphics, however.
I used the release CD. Everything went well until the initial reboot when
the system froze hard. I finally removed power and battery to get it to
reboot.
Once it rebooted, it works very well.

Good Luck,
