I believe I have experienced something like this when I was working with
a VIA EPIC system.  I had to re-compile the kernel as 386/586 with AMD
K2 support
not 686.  Took a while to figure out but I was doing everything via pxe without
any local storage.  It was a 2.4 kernel back then but I believe it to
be the same issue.
