[PLUG] Can't reply or compose in Thunderbird

Something weird happened overnight. I got e-mail with T-bird this morning and tried to reply to one. The new message form opens and has the correct To: and Subject: boxes filled in. The composition window is empty. It usually has my signature. When I click in that area and type, nothing appears on the screen. It worked fine yesterday. I  shut down and restarted T-bird -- no change. I rebooted the machine -- no change.

I am sending this from Comcast web mail.

Any ideas where to start figuring this out?
