Further Googling turned up this:

It indicates that sound is not ready for prime time -- at least when 
production is the goal.

For the current project I reverted to Audacity on XP, which just worked 
when I started using it. It was a short project and is completed. 
Hopefully the sound gurus will figure something out down the road.
