Rich, I think in your context it is likeley an Arcgis map package
http://www.esri.com/news/arcuser/0911/share-and-document-maps-with-map-packages.html
esri also produces more than its share of proprietary data formats. I
don't know what application to use for it, but "rm"
might work.
