I think there was this transitional period where MS Office saved its
new format with .xml extension, but now it's .docx.

Try making a copy of the file and rename it with an extension ".docx"
and then open it in open office or libre office.  The newer the
version of OO/LO the better.  If that doesn't work, then I'm not sure
what the free alternatives are...
