I have had good luck with Logitech web cams.  We used one for my son's
science fair experiment to make time-lapse movies of slugs.  We found
a reference to "Cheese" as an is-it-working kind of ap.  We used
"motion" for the time-lapse.  I've used it with Skype as well.  Works
good!

My first web cam was an Intel thing, I got it for $5 at a garage sale,
and it never worked right.
