You might also try puting a few layers of electrical tape (or any tape
that has substantial thickness to it) over the write-protect swith
notch on the adapter.

What kernel module does the card reader on your laptop use? Some of
them offer the option of ignoring the card reader's write-protect
feature.  E.g.,

  $ modinfo sdricoh_cs
  filename: /lib/modules/3.0.0-1-amd64/kernel/drivers/mmc/host/sdricoh_cs.ko
  license:        GPL
  description: Ricoh PCMCIA Secure Digital Interface driver
  author: Sascha Sommer <saschasommer at freenet.de>
  alias:          pcmcia:m*c*f*fn*pfn*paD9F522EDpbACE80909pc*pd*
  alias:          pcmcia:m*c*f*fn*pfn*paD9F522EDpbC3901202pc*pd*
  depends:        pcmcia,mmc_core
  intree:         Y
  vermagic:       3.0.0-1-amd64 SMP mod_unload modversions
  parm: switchlocked:Switch the cards locked status.Use this when unlocked cards are shown readonly (default 0) (uint)
