I installed openjdk-6-jre using Synaptic. Then, with Firefox, I went to
a Java test page:

http://javatester.org/version.html

Firefox displayed a bar above the content of the page that said a
plug-in was needed to display the some of the content on the page. At
that point, there was a box a little below that said something to the
effect that Java wasn't working or not installed. I clicked on the
button in the bar above and iced-tea installed itself in Firefox. After
that, the box a little below showed a pink rectangle telling me that
Java Version: 1.6.0_24 from Sun Microsystems Inc." is installed.

I can now successfully access the Costco photo upload page.

Yes. I found it under Tools/Options. In the first section there is a
list with Java at the bottom. Clicking on that changes what is displayed
on the right to the Java options panel. I now have the choice of two
environments. I changed from the version at location:

  /use/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.26/jre

to the version at location:

  usr/libljvm/java-6-openjdk/jre

LibreOffice Writer appears to be working normally.

Thanks to all who responded.
