Well actually it did just a little bit. I was able to unmount the
.gvfs directory and change the permissions as "su". But when I went
to remount it, the system complained that no such entry was found in
the /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab. I suspect only on system reboot will
this directory get remounted again, and I suspect with the file
permissions reset back to the default value 500.
I guess for me the --exclude option is working just fine, as I did
watch several scores of files get deleted from my home area on the
backup disk which I knew were old files.
